A.W.
Fergus Feehily
Fergus Feehily has in recent years shown a certain reticence to in any sense explain his work and A.W., his new publication for 41/42, is no different. The publication was made over just a couple of weeks in early 2023, and includes paper works made by Feehily in the last couple of years, images from the artist’s collection, and makes reference to the artist Alfred Wallis, who lived in St Ives, Cornwall.
Fergus Feehily is an artist living in Berlin, Germany.

Smoke-Screens
Charlie Godet Thomas & Leo Marz
Smoke-Screens documents a conversation between Leo Marz and Charlie Godet Thomas - two artists who have overlapping interests in their respective practices. For this project, they have decided to explore what they see as the importance and potential of noticing and examining fleeting moments, in a world lived at an ever increasing speed. The pages describe two imagined characters, one central in the frame and one implied, out of frame apart from the studied movement of a hand holding a cigarette. The first fourteen pages were drawn by Marz and subsequently worked on by Godet Thomas, who then drew pages twenty to thirty-one in response.
Charlie Godet Thomas is an artist living in Mexico City, Mexico. Leo Marz is an artist living in Monterrey, Mexico.

BECAUSE
Daniel Sturgis
The text in this publication was written in Stromness, Orkney in 2013. It was there that Daniel Sturgis first began making circle paintings in watercolour. The black and white watercolours, and the acrylic painting on paper which forms the cover of this booklet, have been reproduced to scale - and were painted this year for the project with 41/42. Together with the text, they can be seen to act as a primer to Sturgis’s painting.
Daniel Sturgis is an artist living in London, UK.

Every painting paints itself
Sofia Stevi & Giacomo Mercuriali
In 2022, Sofia Stevi and Giacomo Mercuriali spent some time in Venice, Italy. 'Every painting paints itself' is a painted poem that unfolds a history of affects that rose from four eyes encountering each other; in between the streets, the churches, the vistas and the canals of the immortal mirror city. Contradicting the Renaissance adagio that holds that “every artist paints himself”, the artists claim the primacy of forms over the subjects they transform. Pen and ink, words, generative algorithm.
Sofia Stevi is an artist living in Athens, Greece. Giacomo Mercuriali is an artist living in Milan, Italy.

Twenty fences
Ian Homerston
Presented here are twenty closeboard fences, nearly all of which are situated within walking distance of Ian Homerston’s flat and studio in Deal, on the Kent coast. Homerston began photographing this particular kind of fence a few years ago, initially with the intention of painting them, “Making paintings of them that is”. As Homerston describes, “A fence as a structure shares certain characteristics with the material support of a painting - fences and paintings both tending to have a front, a back, and an edge. But the construction of a closeboard fence means it has a surface which is made up of multiple surfaces and edges.. Seeing as I tend to make paintings of things that are nearby, once I began to notice their formal qualities it was probably only a matter of time before I started to paint them.”
Ian Homerston is an artist living in Deal, UK.
